Why was It Necessary?
You know what – sometimes in life after coming out of certain moments I want to kick myself. This incident is just one of them when I just took my bus and came back home ignoring whatever I was looking at. It happened almost one and a half years ago. I had to get my bike serviced at city motors so I was there at 7:45 AM (Still had to wait about half an hour in the queue) – Yes that’s how famous it was before it became Pratham motors. No idea how is it now.
Anyways after leaving my bike at the service station I came back to the bus stop to take my bus home. I waited for nearly 20 minutes by this time the morning breeze was gone and all I was feeling was hungry and sweaty. I could see the bus coming but I did see something else also which I ignored for reasons I am still searching for. This is the story of two bikers one alone on his bike and the other with a pillion rider. The other guy was driving around crazily on the highway stretch swirling his bike around until he ran into the simple guy trying to evade a ruthless PMT driver. The simple guy fell down but the subsequent events were all the more surprising. The guy who did dash his bike into the simple guy’s stopped his bike just behind the fallen one – which by the way was right in the middle of the road. Then he forcefully removed his helmet and slapped him twice and continued. The mistake was his own but he was so in denial as if he believed that the entire road was his own property. This incident might look funny rather than a sad one. But it’s not that if you have seen such people in action. I was wondering what was going through this self-proclaimed innocent guy hitting the other one. What heights humans can achieve with their ego is really indefinable to me. I think after all if the loss is materialistic then the outcomes also got to be egoistic.
The onlookers (me included) did nothing apart from pity. But I was wondering why was it necessary for the ravaged soul to park his bike right in the middle of the road ? Why did he hit him ? Why no one did anything ? Why was the innocent guy getting beaten up by the guilty ? Why the guilty were two and innocent just one ? Why did I still take my bus and get home ? Nothing happened to the guilty’s bike but he wanted to show off. Because the damage was not to the bike but to the ego. He was the owner of the road to his knowledge. He was authorized to park his bike in the middle of the road and disrupt traffic. How could I be so inane to something so incorrect like this ?
P.S. Didnt get time to write this one properly but this is a half filled thing nonethless.
IT and the big blunder
Tuesday, May 12, 2009
Every time I hear someone cursing my one field Information technology I seriously doubt their intellect and intentions. What’s transparent from it is they simply have no understanding about the subject in small and the economy at large.
IT is the only field where you can earn more money only by utilizing your brain no physical prowess can help you. You may have a great physical strength but this is only for the people with aptitude. Yes there are fields like BPO and all which have been falsely categorized under IT culture – they are nothing but hogwash from business majors. I reckon it’s the sheer amount of human capital invested in IT that allows the onlookers to have a go.
But that is like the Raj Thackeray stand – why are more people flocking to Maharashtra. All the industries are just for the locals – poor chap no understanding of the economics. Just because India doesn’t have the concept of economic zones as pronounced as it should be can’t be taken as a valid point to propagate this fallacy. It’s everywhere the same more or less in the world. Inside a country there are centers with their specialty .If one city is famous for education the other is for living and the other for tourism and the other for its industry and some other for farming. If chaps like him really do want to have an impact why doesn’t he lobby for the development of states he calls as backward. If Mumbai can so many industries may be places in UP AND BIHAR can be projected as farming and tourism hubs. Places where people would dream about living after their work years.
He doesn’t understand a simple logic you can build your mansion but if you don’t think about your surroundings at large more or less you will be doomed one day just like global warming lurks as a danger waiting to engulf the human race in the bloodiest of revenges of Mother Nature.
That is not a diversion from the main point it just paints a not so pretty picture of people who fail to realize the developments around them. It’s like imagine if we had a Raj like character in IT. It’s like the forefather’s of computers would say we have invented this and only our followers or countrymen can reap its benefits. We would have people beating up others when a new guy wanted to purchase a laptop. There would be protests when the teens wanted to take admission to any computers related branch. A new IT company boss would be humiliated publicly if was a mechanical or civil guy looking for a foray in IT services.
I know all this sounds absurd but it shouldn’t after what we have already witnessed. Just because there are so many people involved in IT doesn’t make it bad. I am a software engineer and I love my branch and I hate when people take the shots. If you talk to leading economists they say why the Singur tragedy happened it’s because they didn’t follow the process model adapted by the IT companies. At least as far as India goes IT has provided the people the means of living. If a survey was to happen amongst the brightest in different fields I won’t be astonished if the IT lads won it by a far and wide margin. Just because there’s not enough quality – work and people involved in IT doesn’t make it a reason for cursing it. What is that separates humans from other species on this planet – the answer is pretty simple human brain. What is it that distinguishes IT from other fields – the answer is subtle this time The Computer.
The computer is just a toned down version of the human mind. I am not interested in writing a philosophically inclined article but I can’t think of better a way of explaining the so called conservationist. This article is not aimed at people who are against computers because I am sure there are very few left but at those who don’t stop taking a dig at IT. It’s for those commenting at my job – he is just another software engineer. Yes I am and I am proud of it.
As IT goes down real estate goes down, the consumer spending goes down and the auto industry almost sinks. And now where are those other guys facing it hard to survive because some IT company ran into losses.
May be I can’t frame my anguish through this article but it at least will do the job of a reminder to party poopers that they missed the bus.
